EYE TRAUMA

Trauma to the eye can cause serious injury to all parts of the eye, including the iris, lens, retina and optic nerve. There can be tears in the sclera (wall of the eyeball), cornea, or iris; dislocation of the lens; cataracts; vitreous hemorrhage; retinal tears or detachments; and optic neuropathy to name a few conditions. A thorough eye exam is recommended and eventually routine eye exams are needed to detect any sequelae that may develop over time such as glaucoma. If there is a penetrating injury, commonly called an open globe or ruptured globe, prompt repair is needed to close the wounds. After the wounds are closed, a subsequent surgery called an ocular reconstruction (from front the front of the eye to the retina) may be needed to give you the best opportunity to see again out of the injured eye. Dr. Tieu specializes in ocular reconstruction to help patients see as much as possible after trauma.
