BRIAN C. TIEU, MD, PhD
Dr. Brian Tieu is a board-certified ophthalmologist (eye surgeon) who specializes in retinal surgeries and innovative research. He is a graduate of the University of Texas Medical Branch, where he simultaneously obtained a medical degree (M.D.) and doctorate (Ph.D.) in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. After finishing his Ophthalmology Residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Methodist Hospital Houston, and MD Anderson Cancer Center, Dr. Tieu completed a two-year vitreoretinal surgical fellowship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). Upon completing his training, Dr. Tieu became an assistant professor and faculty member at both UMMC and the G.V. Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center.
In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Tieu performs clinical and basic science research on retinal detachment, eye trauma, and new methods of intraocular lens placement, among other areas of scientific interests. Dr. Tieu has co-authored several textbook chapters, published many peer-reviewed articles in renowned international journals, and has been invited as a keynote speaker and presenter at local, regional, and national medical and scientific conferences. Over the years, he has received numerous awards and recognition during his training and as a faculty member in the department of ophthalmology for outstanding research, quality of patient care, teaching, and being very personable as well as compassionate. Dr. Brian Tieu is also recognized as a highly skilled retina surgeon and successful researcher among his peers.

He spent the first 6 years of his career at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the GV Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center teaching medical students and developing doctors into competent eye surgeons and retina specialists. Now he is focused on transforming the way he practices medicine to enhance his patients’ experience while continuing to improve on providing patients the highest level of medical and surgical care possible. He built the Retina Institute of Mississippi for his patients and will continue to apply his expertise in research for the benefit of patients everywhere.
Dr. Tieu and his wife, Dr.Carolyn Cushing, enjoy spending time with their five young children and many farm animals in Madison, Mississippi.
